Last year Vieng had the opportunity to participate in Rugby World Cup activities in Japan on behalf of the LRF’s partner, ChildFund. Vieng represented Laos as a rugby Coach to lead children from Singapore in the Societe Generale Rugby Spirit Festival. Vieng shared a few thoughts from her trip:
The experience was very interesting for me especially in developing and using English language to teach children from many countries to be able to participate. I also had the opportunity to go with the children to watch a Rugby World Club match at the real stadium, which I never thought I would actually see with my own eyes on the field like this. It was very exciting for all of us.
For this trip to Japan, there was a language challenge because we had to communicate with the children all in English and so I felt a lot of pressure. Also, with Coaches and children from more than 9 countries, there were many language and cultural differences to navigate. During the Festival, we did many activities about Japanese culture, rugby and meeting new friends from many places. The changing environment gave us a variety of experiences and I had to adapt my role often as both a Coach and caregiver in different activities. This trip to Japan taught me and all of us about the culture of the country. We even learned to write Japanese characters for the word rugby. That was a highlight for me too.
One of the most important things I learned from that experience that I still keep with me now is about being a leader and adapting to a new environment. This can be applied to my current job because being a leader at my office I have to adapt quickly and be able to make decisions with the situation. I have to have courage to face obstacles. What I keep in mind now is that once you go through a difficult period, you will learn and grow from that and nothing will be harder than we can handle.
From the interview above, it can be seen that Ms. Vieng is diligent in her work as a Coach and caregiver and happy to be a part of this event. While there were some obstacles that she faced including language, she was able to overcome and learn from that. By answering these interview questions she wanted to share about the things she had encountered and how she could manage to be successful in her work. She was both proud to represent Laos at this event but also experience pressure at some points. Anyway, she overcame these challenges and can reflect to tell others about the events she went through and how this experience helped her develop as a Coach and leader so that others might feel motivated to develop themselves great Coaches and leaders.
