Ms. Lodchana Keomanyvong attended an exchange program last year in Japan and said, “My friends and I came to the JTB Orientation. Eleven countries attended. On the first day, they gave an overview of the general background of JENESYS 2019, and assigned the duties of participants in Japan. They suggested a plan for the next nine days, as well as a list of conditions and rules for us to follow.”
“The first lecture topic related to Rugby. Mr. Moukoyama Masatoshi, former National Rugby Team player, advised us how to play tag rugby. He told us about Rugby’s Values in order to be safe while playing, and he also talked about the Rugby World Cup to be held in Japan. After that, we were all broken into groups to play tag rugby in the afternoon. We practiced with the players from a club in the Shizuoka City, where they did activities jovially. Practicing Tag Rugby we were broken into mixed teams consisting of A, B, C, D, E and F players from the Shizuoka City Club. A current National Rugby Team player led activities similar to our ChildFund Pass It Back curriculum including the chain game (an activity from the ChildFund Pass It Back curriculum). The rules of Japanese tag rugby are different from our country. In Japan, they play 5-vs-5. Every time a rule is broken, play must stop, and there are no scrums or lineouts. I got to know a lot of new friends and build strong relationships. I trained to be ready for the friendship match the next day.”
After the activities, we also had a party and performed together. It was a wonderful night full of happiness, in which we got to listen to beautiful songs and see dances from each country. Each country was able to include a cultural performance of their own. I also visited the local government in the Shizuoka Prefecture. They welcomed the Rugby World Cup to Japan. Before the Rugby World Cup was held in Japan, they had been preparing the budget for four years, with many sponsors.
“The next day, I traveled to Tokyo to visit the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He spoke about the economy, the population, cooperation with ASEAN countries, and that Japan see ASEAN as a priority. He talked about programs that link ASEAN countries, such as Heart to Heart which lasts for up to 30 years. He also talked about the Rugby World Cup being held in Japan. My favorite things to learn about during this program were science, modern technology, history and traditional culture. From attending this exchange, I learned about culture from the Play of the Hokomoto, which conveyed the civilization of the Shizuoka Prefecture. I also learned from the performance of traditional Japanese Taiko drumming. I also learned how to play the Taiko drum with Japanese people as well. Then, I learned how to make tea correctly in Japanese practice. Apart from learning culture, I also played tag rugby differently than the tag rugby I was taught in Childfund Pass It Back. The differences include playing 5-vs-5, when a rule is broken the ball is turned over and the team cannot advance up the field until the ball is passed, and there are not scrums or lineouts. I learned about waste separation, including that every trash station consists of three bins for dry waste, wet waste and plastic waste. They also told us about the economic condition of Japan, along with the demeanor of the Japanese people, who are very strict about things like punctuality.

I got to know new friends. Throughout the activities, we got the chance to do things together. I greeted my foreign friends by speaking English, introducing myself and attending more activities. This helped me gain new friends, and we also exchanged our Facebook names. Although, we travelled back to our respective countries, we still keep in touch and we are looking forward to visiting each other in the future.
What I am proud of is that the Lao team was regarded as the most disciplined of all, so they arranged a special bus for us. We were so surprised and happy that we were praised by Japanese people. We had the opportunity to attend the Rugby World Cup 2019. I never thought I would see the real competition. The knowledge that I have acquired here, along with memories, feelings, and new information I will use to develop myself in the future and to maintain this connection. If I could be given the opportunity, I would like to go back to Japan again in order to pursue my study, work or travel. I really enjoyed my time and was happy to learn. Thanks to the Lao Rugby Federation and JENESYS program for giving me this wonderful opportunity.”
“Attending the Rugby World Cup helped me to realize that every national team and every country took time to prepare before they came to the Rugby World Cup. That inspired me to coach my players to be excellent and train myself to better, even if I could not be one of the players in the Rugby World Cup. I wish I could compete in a major competition in Laos or have the opportunity to compete overseas. I didn't think I would ever come to see a big competition. I was so excited and impressed to see many people having fun. I think ChildFund Pass It Back opened up this opportunity to me. I was a player before I became a Coach, and now I have had the opportunity to go to Japan. ChildFund Pass It Back opens opportunities for everyone to learn both nationally and internationally. I, as a Coach, will share this curriculum to parents and community members and children in order to get their attention to play rugby and to have the opportunity to learn and gain new experiences. Thanks to ChildFund Pass It Back and all the related partners that gave me this exchange opportunity in Japan.
What Tina has learned and experienced is very important to her because she had never learned about culture from Japan before this trip. It helped her to learn new things that she can use in the future, and she can now spread knowledge of the opportunity to study, travel, and work in places like Japan. The lessons she will apply to her life in Laos include cleanliness and personal responsibility, which are not only important in Japan - they apply to everyone and every country. Her 9 days in Japan made her get used to it and will use it in her own country. The experience was valuable and very important to her. She can share valuable experiences and knowledge with players, communities, schools and families about the cultural practices in Japan, especially around waste management and the Rugby World Cup. She’s excited to train and develop confidence in her players, now that she’s seen international rugby competition firsthand. This knowledge makes her a leader in waste management, time management and courtesy. She has told her community to do good things, like they do in Japan.
