Phaivanh is a Pass It Back coach in Vientiane Province, who was formerly a player with the programme. While only being 17 years old, she oversees multiple teams with a total of over 50 players.

“It is fun and I wanted to be a good coach like coach Tae [another coach in the programme] when I was her player.”

Phaivanh decided to apply to become a coach because she wanted to develop children in order for them to know about rugby and learn how to play it.  When she was selected to become a coach, she underwent training at Vientiane Capital.

After the coach training, Phaivanh became a leader and started delivering sessions to children in her community.

“I am very proud that even though I am young, I am able to lead children and pass on knowledge to them. The things that I teach children come from what I learned during the training, such as equal rights among females and males and exercising power. I teach in a way that is easy to understand. If players do not understand, I will share real-life examples.”

Overall, coaching work requires session planning for each team spread across multiple schools on a daily basis. There are also tasks associated with coaches, such as sending photos of each session, completing petrol forms and double-checking the various forms for accuracy at the end of the month.

“It is difficult and exhausting because I have to coach many teams. Some teams have players that are the same age as me, therefore sometimes they may not listen to me and it is hard to control them. When I teach players that are the same age as me, it is very hard. But I have warned them that when I deliver sessions, we have a coach-player relationship and they have to show respect and listen. If we are outside school or we are done studying, then we can treat each other as friends. Sometimes I finish school late, it causes difficulties because the players leave earlier and I cannot deliver all the activities.”

In order to follower her lesson plan and achieve her own goals, Phaivanh became more diligent at time management. “Since I am responsible for many teams, I divided my schedule and planned which days I will teach at certain schools and at what time I will teach so that the players will not leave early. I schedule time with the players and I also have to be punctual myself.”

“Being responsible for coaching has helped me become more of a leader and have more confidence. For example, I am able to take the lessons I learned and teach them to children” said Phaivanh. Phaivanh has the confidence to do many different things, whether that is coaching or giving advice and expressing her thoughts. She is able to give good advice and tell the players what they should do when she coaches.

Now Phaivanh applies the life skills she learned in her daily life. She knows how to make a plan in order to become a coach and to follow through with the plan she makes. What’s more, even though Phaivanh is young, she is able to manage time to balance her coaching duties with her school work. Phaivanh is a role model for her 50 players who are studying at school and gaining experience through the Pass It Back program.
